Seniors finish season with 11-10 win over Minnesota Duluth

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- An eighth inning home run by junior Parker Borg led the Bemidji State University baseball team to an 11-10 season-finale win over the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at BSU Baseball Field. The Beavers finish the season 8-32 overall and 7-28 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as three student-athletes recorded three RBI each.

Bemidji State took a first-inning lead over Minnesota Duluth for the third straight game as BSU’s first four batters reached base, including junior Sam Kalberer with a walk to finish his season on a 30-game on-base streak. With two men on, Borg hit an RBI single up the middle to put the Beavers up one before senior Isaiah Grancorvitz knocked out his fourth home run of the season to extend the lead to 4-0.

Minnesota Duluth came back with six runs in the top of the second inning for its first lead of the day. The Bulldogs started with a solo home run before an RBI double, RBI ground out, a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-RBI single for a 6-4 advantage.

The Beavers came back with another four-run inning in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. BSU put two runners on with back-to-back singles as the first came in to score on a wild pitch. Following a walk to senior Hunter Lake, freshman Carter Simon came up with his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field to give BSU an 8-6 lead. Sophomore Tom Keohen extended the BSU lead by one with an RBI single to bring home Grancorvitz in the fourth inning.

UMD threatened to take the lead again in the top of the sixth inning after loading the bases with no outs. BSU pitcher Will Lavin (1-7) entered to pitch and drew a double play to start and finished with a ground out, as two runners brought the Beavers’ lead to one 9-8. The Bulldogs then tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Simon led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk and was followed two batters later with a two-run, go-ahead home run by Borg. Borg’s third home run of the season gave BSU an 11-9 lead heading into the ninth inning. Lavin threw the final four innings to earn the win, including a strikeout to seal Bemidji State’s 11-10 win.

Borg and Simon led BSU with three hits each, while the duo and Grancorvitz each added three RBI and home runs. Simon also scored three runs followed by Borg and Grancorvitz with two each. Junior pitcher Logan Barrick started the game with 5.0 innings pitched and four strikeouts.

Bemidji State hit 14-of-36 from the plate and 4-of-8 from the lead-off spot. The Beavers stranded just five baserunners and went 9-of-19 from the plate with runners on base.
