BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University baseball assistant coach Matt Ellinghuysen will take over as interim head coach, announced Friday by BSU Director of Athletics Tracy Dill. Ellinghuysen steps to the head position after serving eight seasons as an assistant coach, including six with the Beavers.
“More than anything, I’m very appreciative of Tracy Dill for hiring me as the next head coach at BSU,” Ellinghuysen said. “I’m excited to get going with our guys. I think we have a great group and believe that our team is not too far away from being really competitive within the conference.
"Again, thank you to Tracy (Dill) and Tim Bellew for helping me along the way, as well as Paul Blanchard at Southwest Minnesota State University. Coach Bellew and Coach Blanchard are my mentors who have helped me greatly. Everything they’ve done is much appreciated.”
Ellinghuysen completed his sixth season as an assistant coach for Bemidji State in 2021. He began his coaching career with the Beavers in 2014 before completing his master’s degree as a graduate assistant coach for the Mustangs. Ellinghuysen coached at BSU from 2014-16 before spending the next two seasons at SMSU. He returned to Bemidji State in 2019 and has spent the past three seasons as the top assistant coach. Bemidji State and Southwest Minnesota State have accumulated seven all-conference selections during Ellinghuysen’s time with the programs.
Ellinghuysen was a four-year starter at third base for Bemidji State from 2010-13. He was voted team captain during his junior and senior seasons while he played in 124 career games with 113 starts. Through his career, Ellinghuysen hit .283 with 100 hits, 58 RBI and 30 runs scored.
Ellinghuysen graduated from BSU in May 2013 with a degree in sport management and a minor in mass communications. He earned his master’s degree in physical education from Southwest Minnesota State in 2018. Ellinghuysen and his wife Jessica, a former Beaver Women’s Hockey student-athlete, reside in Bemidji.
Ellinghuysen takes the reins from Bellew who served as the Beavers’ head coach for the past 16 seasons and ranks second in program history with 228 wins. He left his coaching duties following the season to move into an administrative position within the department.
