Perkins home run helps Bemidji State to win over Minnesota Duluth Friday

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- Junior John Perkins delivered a game-changing home run for Bemidji State University baseball Friday afternoon as part of a series-opening split against the University of Minnesota Duluth at BSU Baseball Field. BSU opened its first true home game of the season with a 5-4 win over UMD before a loss of 14-1 to even the series.

Game One – BSU, 5-4
Bemidji State allowed all four of its runs to Minnesota Duluth in the top of the third inning, coming on a two-RBI double and two-run home run. Exiting the half inning facing a 4-0 deficit, the Beavers scored their first run of the day behind a lead-off double from Perkins and an RBI single from freshman Hunter Daymond.

BSU came back in the fourth to tie the game, putting two runners on base with two outs. Perkins knocked out his first home run of the season and second of his career to tie the game, 4-4. Freshman Isaiah Biehn led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error on the attempted throw down. Sophomore Jack Munson came up with an RBI doule to center field to drive in the game-winning RBI.

Junior Logan Barrick (2-6) threw 5.2 innings with no earned runs allowed to go along with seven strikeouts and three walks to earn the win. Senior Travis Carruth entered to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning before closing the game with his first save of the season.

Game Two – UMD, 14-1
Bemidji State’s bats were hot early in game two with three hits, including an RBI single by senior Sam Kalberer to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. BSU accounted for just one hit after the first inning compared to 17 hits and 14 runs for UMD over the final eight frames.

The Bulldogs took their final lead of the game with four runs in the top of the second inning before adding another run in the third and three in the fourth. UMD chipped in one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings before capping the game with a four-run ninth inning.

Bemidji State will finish its 2022 season Saturday with senior day against Minnesota Duluth. The Beavers and Bulldogs will throw the first pitch at 12 p.m. with senior day festivities to ensue after the game at BSU Baseball Field.
