BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- Senior Tom Keohen made his final performance with Bemidji State University a memorable one with two home runs despite a 9-8 loss to the University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at BSU Baseball Field. Three seniors recorded RBI hits while two others scored runs as the Beavers ended the 2022 season.
Both teams traded runs over alternating innings including runs from UMD in the first, third and fifth innings and runs from BSU in the second and fourth innings. Keohen knocked out the first of his two home runs in the bottom of the second inning with freshman Matthew Kucera on base to give BSU a 2-1 lead.
Following two runs from UMD in the third inning, Keohen homered again in the fourth, a solo shot, followed by a wild pitch that allowed senior Stephane Lagasse to score and give the lead back to BSU, 4-3. The Bulldogs scored the next five runs of the game, two in the fifth and three in the sixth inning, to regain an 8-4 lead.
Senior John Perkins and freshman Isaiah Biehn recorded back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to set up a three-run inning. Senior Sam Kalberer doubled to center field to drive in Perkins ahead of a wild pitch that allowed Biehn to score. Sophomore Jack Munson followed Kalberer with an RBI single to center field to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
Munson singled with one out in the eighth inning to set up the game-tying run two at-bats later. After advancing to second base on a balk, senior Tom Magnusson singled through the left side to drive in Munson and tie the game, 8-8. A leadoff home run by UMD in the top of the ninth inning as the difference as the BSU side was retired in order to end the game.
Keohen was one of four Beavers with two hits, while he led the team with three RBI and two runs scored. Kalberer, Kucera and Munson each also totaled two hits on the day.
Three senior pitchers threw at least 2.0 innings in the game, including Travis Carruth who went 2.1 innings with one hit, no runs and no walks allowed.
Bemidji State honored its 10 graduating seniors following the game, including pitcher Jackson Back, utility player Parker Borg, Carruth, Alex Fietek, Kalberer, Keohen, Lagasse, Magnusson, Perkins and MacGregor Sharpe.
