BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Bethany Thompson (Sr., OH, Owatonna, Minn.) and Cory Crosby (Sr., ILB, Cold Spring, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Sept. 3-9.
Thompson, the Bemidji State volleyball team’s captain and lone senior, led her to team to its second victory of the season at last weekend’s UMD Volleyball Classic and was named to the all-tournament team. The Owatonna, Minn. native recorded at least a double-double (18.33 kills and 15.33 digs per match) in each of the team’s three matches and was among the top five performers in the tournament in kills and aces per game, as well as top ten in digs per game. Thompson registered career highs in kills with 24 in a win over Erskine (S.C) University and digs and aces (21 and four, respectively) in a four-set loss to 19th-ranked Ferris State University.
Thompson’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for a member of the BSU volleyball team, while it stands as the third of the senior’s career. She also garnered the accolade Sept. 7 and Nov. 16 of last season.
Crosby led the BSU football team posting a season-high 12 tackles (six solo) in its 38-10 loss at Minnesota State University, Mankato Sept. 8. Now with 230 career tackles, he sits just 29 shy of inserting himself among the top 10 tacklers in the BSU football all-time record book.
While this week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first of the season for Crosby, second of his career. He was also named athlete of the week Oct. 20, 2010. He is the second BSU football player to be honored by the organization. He follows Lance Rongstad (Sr., QB, Eleva, Wis.), who earned the award Sept. 5.
The BSU football team returns to action Saturday when it host Wayne State College in the team’s 16th Annual Shrine Game. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium.
The BSU volleyball team will pick up play on Friday when they head west to play new NSIC member Minot State University to begin conference competition. BSU will face University of Mary the following day before taking on University of Minnesota, Crookston on Sept. 18 in its home opener.
