Beaver Pride names Larson and Pulkinen Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Tina Larson (Sr., Morris, Minn.) and Zach Pulkinen (Jr., P/K, Minot, N.D.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Oct. 8-14.

Larson led the Bemidji State University cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the 5,000-meter Jimmie Invitational at Hillcrest Golf Course Oct. 12 in Jamestown, N.D. Larson's time of 20:12.00 was good for 10th place overall individually, marking her third top-10 finish of the season and her fastest 5,000-meter time of 2012.

Larson’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of her career and the first for a member of the BSU cross country team in 2012.

Pulkinen was good on all three extra point attempts, pinned Northern State University inside its own 20 yard line on all three of his punts that totaled 131 yards (43.7 yards per punt) – including a 55 yard punt that tied a career-high – and posted 246 yards on four kickoffs to average 61.5 yards per kick in the BSU football team’s 23-6 home victory against NSU Oct. 13. He also added a special teams tackle.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first of the season for Pulkinen, while it stands as the second time the Minot, N.D. native has been recognized by the organization. He was previously honored for excellence on the football field Oct. 5 of last season.

For his efforts, he was also named Northern Sun Inter Collegiate Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

The BSU football team enters its toughest two-game stretch of the season, as the team takes to the road for its next two contests, starting Oct. 20 with a 1 p.m. contest at No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth (6-1; 6-1 NSIC, 2-1 NSIC North).

The Bemidji State cross country team will compete in the 2012 NSIC Cross Country Championships Saturday.  The 6,000-meter race will take place at Les Bolstad Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. and is set for a 12 p.m. starting gun.
