Olszewski named NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Sophomore corner back Gunner Olszewski was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after breaking the Bemidji State University football single-game punt return yardage record versus University of Minnesota Crookston. Olszewski broke the previous Beavers record by 40 yards and returned one punt for a touchdown.

The Alvin, Texas, native returned seven punts for 194 yards in Bemidji State’s 76-13 win over Minnesota Crookston in the annual “Hubcap” traveling trophy game to finish the regular season. Olszewski topped Jason Leden’s mark of 154 punt returns yards, set in 2001, to earn his second NSIC Player of the Week honor of the season and third of his career. This is Olszewski’s first player of the week award on special teams.

Olszewski returned his first punt return versus UMC for 42 yards to set up a one-yard touchdown and the go-ahead score. He scored his touchdown on a 72-yard punt return early in the second quarter to put the Beavers up 21-0. Olszewski finished the day averaging 27.7 yards per punt return and returned four punts for at least 25 yards.

The Beavers have earned six NSIC Player of the Week awards in 2016, the most in a single season for the program since 2007 when they earned six.

BSU earned a bid to the 2016 Mineral Water Bowl with its regular season finale win versus UMC. Bemidji State will make its second trip to the post-season and face Washburn University at noon on Saturday, Dec. 3 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. The Ichabods will make their second appearance all-time in the Mineral Water Bowl, which will be played at Tiger Stadium.  BSU and WU have never faced each other.

Bemidji State previously advanced to the Mineral Water Bowl in 2006, where they took a 35-27 loss to Pittsburg State University.
