Junker takes away NSIC Player of the Week after nabbing three turnovers

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Junior defensive back Michael Junker tallied three takeaways and a defensive touchdown to secure his first career Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor. Junker helped guide the Bemidji State University football program to a 69-0 shutout, its second shutout in as many weeks.

Junker, a Hastings, Minn., native, pulled away two interceptions and grabbed one fumble recovery against University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium. He brought back his first interception 100 yards for a touchdown, while nearly scoring another touchdown on his second interception. Junker finished the game with four tackles and one sack to go along with 106 interception return yards.

Junker is BSU’s second student-athlete to earn NSIC Defensive Player of the Week during the 2018 season, after sophomore linebacker Gabe Ames earned the distinction following the opening week of action.

Junker and BSU will travel to Duluth, Minn., Saturday, Sept. 22 to take on No. 16 University of Minnesota Duluth. The Beavers and Bulldogs kickoff at 6 p.m. in the 58th meeting all-time between the two programs.
