Beaver Football continues to receive votes in AFCA Top 25 Poll

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Back-to-back victories has boosted Bemidji State University football’s status in the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Top 25 Poll, garnering four votes as the weekly poll was released Monday.

BSU moved to 2-0 to start the season following a 38-28 victory over Wayne State College on Saturday, September 11 at Chet Anderson Stadium. The Beavers received four votes in the second weekly installment of the AFCA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll, up by three votes from the previous week.

Bemidji State opened its home schedule in front of a crowd of 3,872 with another consistent effort offensively, defensively and on special teams. The Beavers totaled 565 yards on offense, led by sophomore quarterback Brandon Alt with 449 yards through the air. He found receivers Brendan Beaulieu (7 rec., 172 yds), Dhel Duncan-Busby (5 rec., 94 yds), Bubba Peters (5 rec., 3 TDs) and Bryce Duffy (3 rec., 2 TDs) on his way to the program’s second-most passing yards in a single game. Alt was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week, first such honor of his career.

The “Gang Green” defense recorded three takeaways for the second straight week and helped BSU hold a 38-14 lead until midway through the fourth quarter. Freshman defensive back Colton Herman led BSU with eight tackles, including 1.0 tackle for a loss, along with one forced fumble. Sophomore defensive back Keontay Shorter nabbed his first career interception and also forced a fumble.

Bemidji State is one of four NSIC programs to receive votes in the AFCA Top 25 Poll, including No. 13 University of Minnesota Duluth, No. 19 Minnesota State University, Mankato and (RV) Augustana University. BSU faces No. 19 MSU and (RV) AU in back-to-back weeks, beginning Saturday, Sept. 18 against the Mavericks in Mankato, Minn. The Beavers will follow with Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 25 against the Vikings at Chet Anderson Stadium.
