Minneapolis, Minn. - Announced by the league offices yesterday, junior forward Charles Hanks (Chicago, Ill.) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week. Hanks was a big reason for BSU’s home sweep of league-leader Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul over the weekend as he held game-high point honors both nights with 25 on Friday and 26 on Saturday. The first night, he went 11 of 20 (.550) from the field, grabbing six rebounds, tallying two assists and one steal. On Saturday, he was 12 of 17 (.706) from the floor with many of those touches coming in the paint area. He totaled the same rebound output as he went for three assists and one steal.

The league’s eighth-best scorer has gone for double-digits in points in the last nine games and hit 20 or more in four of those contests - he has averaged 18.7 in that stretch. On the weekend, he was 23 of 37 (.622), five-for-six (.833) from the foul line, notching 12 rebounds (6.0 rpg), five assists (2.5 apg), two steals (1.0 spg) and 51 points (25.5 ppg).

“He (Hanks) is being more active and looking to be more of a threat when he touches it,” said head coach Jeff Guiot. “The players are doing an outstanding job of giving him more touches and he is doing a good job in finding the open man when opposing teams double him. Good things happen to us when he gets his touches.”

On the season, Hanks has led the squad seven times in rebounding, which is the most on the club, and seven times in scoring. The 2001-02 NSIC Newcomer of the Year is tops on the team in scoring (15.9 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg), field goal percentage (.523) and made field goals (123), fourth in steals (18) and fifth in assists (36). Hanks tallied his fifth career double-double and second of the season against St. Scholastica (12/11/02) when he had 21 points and 15 rebounds. The Beavers are 12-5 when Hanks records 20 or more points in his career.

Hanks shared the award with Jacob Fahl from Southwest State.

Bemidji State hosts SSU and Wayne State (NE) this weekend as it looks to extend a four-game conference winning streak. Both games start at 7:30 p.m. at the BSU Gymnasium.
