Stamford, Conn. - Today, senior guard Royce Bryan (Haviland, Kan.) was named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District V College Division Men’s Basketball First Team. Bryan holds a 4.00 grade point average with a double major in secondary education and social studies. The 2002-03 team captain is in his second year at Bemidji State after a one-year hiatus at South Plains Community College (TX) where he was Student-Athlete of the Year. In his college career, Bryan has received all A’s and just one B.

Bryan holds the school’s single game record with 11 assists against UM-Crookston (2/2/02) and the best mark for season assists (145) established a year ago. His 5.18 assists a game was tops in the league and 32nd in the country in 2001-02. Currently, he sits fourth on the school charts with 221 career assists as he is 12 away from the third spot.

With four regular season games left in 2002-03, Bryan is first on the squad and fifth in the league in assists per game (4.0). Bryan is also tops with 52 total steals and the league-leader with 2.74 per game. That steals mark puts him 14th in the nation as well. The 6-1 guard is second on the squad in rebounding (3.4), third in minutes per game (28.2) and three-point percentage (.361 - 35/97) and fourth in scoring (9.8) and three-pointers (35). In conference games, he has hit for an 11.1 points per game and stands 14th in three-point accuracy and 19th in scoring. Earlier this season, Bryan hit on at least one three-pointer in a 13-game stretch.

In just his second and third games back from a hand injury that kept him out of four games, Bryan went for 35 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals in the weekend sweep of UM-Morris and Northern State (1/17-1/18/03). His efforts gave him his first career player of the week honors in the league.

Bryan is the only Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference player to be recognized on either the first or second teams. The awards were decided by CoSIDA V Members & Verizon Academic All-America Committee.

“I think Royce is what being a student-athlete is all about,” said head coach Jeff Guiot. “He gives 100 percent in the classroom and on the court. He is also involved in several different activities on campus. But if there is a better student-athlete in the nation, I would like to meet him.”

Bryan and the Beavers host league-leader Northern State Friday and Minnesota-Morris on Saturday at the BSU Gymnasium. BSU stands sixth in the league standings, one-half game out of fifth and one-game back of third-place occupied by two teams. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in the final regular season home contests.
