Beaver Pride tabs Tomcikova and Haake Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Zuzana Tomcikova (So., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) and Seth Haake (Sr., G, Eden Prairie, Minn.,) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Jan. 4-10.

Tomcikova turned away 66 shots and recorded her seveth-career shutout, and fourth of 2009-10, to help the Beavers gain three points from the series versus Minnesota State University, Mankato. She made 29 saves, giving up two goals, in Friday night’s 2-2 draw and made 37 saves, with 30 coming in the first two periods, in Saturday’s 3-0 shutout.

Tomcikova is currently fourth in the nation in saves (564) and eighth in save percentage (.937).

Tomcikova’s selection for the athlete of the week award marks the third time this season a BSU women’s hockey player has garnered the award and the second time the sophomore goaltender has been bestowed with the honor.

Haake averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 3.0 steals in a 0-2 NSIC road weekend at Concordia University-St. Paul and St. Cloud State University. He posted 34.0 minutes per game, 48.0 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe. In the loss to CU, Haake recorded 19 points and seven rebounds, going 4-of-5 from 3-point land. In the loss to SCSU, he had 15 points six rebounds and tied his career-high in steals with five.

Haake becomes the second BSU men’s basketball player to be named Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week in 2009-10. He joins Bryce Tesdahl who won the award Dec. 9.

The BSU women’s hockey team is currently 7-11-4 (6-6-4-3 WCHA) on the season. The Beavers play host to No. 2 Minnesota Golden Gophers this weekend with game times set for 6:07 p.m. on Friday and 4:07 p.m. on Saturday.

Haake and the Bemidji State men’s basketball team (5-9, 2-6 NSIC) continue Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this weekend as they return to the BSU Gymnasium to match up with Northern State University and University of Mary. Game times are set for 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday night.
