NSIC announces changes for 2012-13
BEMIDJI, Minn.  – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference annual meetings concluded Thursday, July 14 in St. Cloud, Minn. with league and institution administrators deciding on some significant issues for the 2012-13 school year. With the additions of University of Sioux Falls and Minot State University to the NSIC for the 2012-13 season, the league will move to a 16-team conference, forcing the administrators to make some changes in regards to divisions and postseason play. The meetings started Tuesday, July 12 with the coaches of each sport and concluded yesterday with the administrators discussing recommendations from the coaches.

“There were probably more decisions made today than at any other meeting we’ve had in a while,” NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond told the St. Cloud Times Thursday. “A tremendous amount of work was done.”

Men’s and women’s basketball will see the most change in 2012-13 as the 16 teams will split into two divisions, like football is now, and all 16 teams will make the postseason tournament. Right now only eight of the 14 teams have an opportunity to win the conference tournament and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Regional. The North Division will consist of Bemidji State, University of Mary, University of Minnesota, Crookston, University of Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Minot State, Northern State University and St. Cloud State University. Basketball current 22-game conference schedule will remain the same, but once the divisions are made each school will play its division opponents twice (14 games) and its opposite division foes once (eight games).

Other decisions made affected volleyball, baseball and softball for 2012-13. Volleyball will not go to divisions, but a postseason tournament will take place with the league’s top eight teams at the conclusion of the 20-match regular season. The NSIC started postseason tournaments in 2004, but hasn’t had a volleyball postseason tournament since moving to a 14 team conference in 2008. Baseball will add two teams to the conference tournament, moving from six to eight teams. The baseball conference schedule has yet to be finalized. Softball is also still working on its conference schedule, but has made the decision to allow 10 teams into the postseason tournament from the eight that advance now.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
