The Game
The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team (7-3; 2-2 NSIC) opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home schedule Dec. 16-17 as Northern State University and University of Mary visit Bemidji. BSU hosts NSU Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. and U-Mary at 6 p.m. Dec. 17 at the BSU Gymnasium

The Beavers
The Bemidji State University men’s basketball team is 7-3 to record its best 10 game start since the 1973-74 team posted a 9-1 mark through 10. BSU is 2-2 in NSIC play this season after spending the start of the conference season on the road and splitting the weekends. Last weekend the Beavers fell to then-No. 17 Winona State 62-49, before downing Upper Iowa 70-60. Sophomore Jake Schalow scored 15 of his 21 points (tied career-high) in the second half of the win against UIU, as BSU outscored the Peacocks 24-14 in the final 7:24 after being tied 46-46. Senior James Ellisor averaged 19.0 points and 10.5 rebounds on the weekend and currently leads the NSIC in scoring with 20.2 points per game. BSU is 3-0 at home this season, playing seven of its first 10 games on the road.

Fast Break
• The Beavers have yet to reach the 80 point plateau this season. Last season through 10 games BSU had gone over 80 points on six occasions. On the season the Beavers did so 12 times and posted a 7-5 record in those contests.
• No worries on the previous note, the Beavers have the second best scoring defense in the NSIC and 23rd best in the nation, allowing just 59.2 points per contest.
• BSU is 6-1 when leading at halftime this season. It’s only loss came to then-No. 17 Winona State Dec. 9.
• The Beavers are 3-0 when losing the previous game in 2011-12.
• BSU has outrebounded its opponent six times this season and owns a 5-1 record. Last season the Beavers went 11-4 - all their wins - when bringing down more rebounds than their opponent.
• The Beavers have taken care of the ball this season. With an average of 10.8 turnovers per game the team leads the NSIC and ranks fifth in the nation.
• BSU is fourth in assist/turnover ratio in the NSIC and 27th in the nation with a 1.22 ratio. That is mostly in thanks to senior Bryce Tesdahl, who leads the league with a 2.50 ratio.
• The Beavers have already played 36% of their NSIC road games this season, starting the first four league games away from the BSU Gymnasium.
• Head coach Matt Bowen has started five different combinations of five this season

The Wolves
The Wolves are 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC after a 57-41 victory against Wayne State (Neb.) and a 76-68 loss to then-No. 16 Augustana Dec. 9-10 in Aberdeen, S.D. NSU opened the season 5-0, winning all four nonconference games and opening the conference season with a 85-70 win at Concordia University, St. Paul. The Wolves are outscoring their opponents by 15.5 points per game. NSU is led by junior Dustin Tetzlaff’s 16.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

All-Time Series vs the Wolves
The Beavers and Wolves have been doing battle since 1959. NSU won that contest 78-48 and own an all-time record of 53-23 against BSU. The Beavers have played the Wolves close as of late, despite holding a 2-3 record in the last five games. All of the last five have been decided by seven or less points and the seven point difference came in a double overtime victory for BSU Jan. 6, 2009. Last season the teams spit, each getting the other on their home court. The Beavers won 92-86 in Aberdeen, S.D. and lost in Bemidji 84-82.

The Marauders
The Marauders are 2-6 overall and 1-3 in NSIC play this season after falling Dec. 9-10 to then-No. 16 Augustana (58-45) and Wayne State (58-55). U-Mary’s lone conference victory came Dec. 3 at Concordia-St. Paul 67-64. Both wins the Marauders have picked-up so far this season have been on the road and by a total margin of four points, downing Chadron State 73-72. Junior Darius Robinson has led the team in scoring five times this season and owns a team-best 15.4 points per game.

All-Time Series vs the Marauders

The Beavers and Marauders played a game in 1971  and twice in 1987 before becoming regular opponents when U-Mary joined the NSIC for the 2006-07 season. BSU is just 2-9 all-time against the Marauders and are 1-4 in the last five games. Last season U-Mary downed BSU 78-56 in Bismarck, N.D. and 71-60 in Bemidji. The last win for BSU came at home Jan. 16, 2010 by the score of 81-59.
