Kostenko and Ellisor garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba) and James Ellisor (Sr., F, Glendale, Ariz.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Dec. 28-Jan. 3.

Kostenko tallied two goals and one assist as the Bemidji State women’s hockey team picked up a nonconference sweep of Robert Morris University Dec. 30-31. In the series-opener, the freshman got BSU off to a 1-0 lead connecting on a power-play goal at the 17:04 mark of the first period. Later in the first period, Kostenko helped the Beavers extend their lead to 2-0 when she found Whitney Wivoda (Fr., F, Fairbanks, Alaska) for a power-play goal. The freshman scored a second period goal to give the Beavers a 2-0 advantage in a series finale BSU would go on to win 3-2.

Kostenko entered last weekend’s series with only two goals and three assists as she was one of several players to step up with the absence of Emily Erickson (Jr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) and Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) due to the their participation in the US Women’s Winter Training Camp Dec. 26-31 in Blaine, Minn. She now leads all BSU freshman and ranks seventh on the team with eight points (4g-4a) in 17 games played.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of Kostenko’s career and the sixth occasion a member of the BSU women’s hockey team has been recognized for the award during the 2011-12 campaign. She follows teammates Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.) who earned the honor Nov. 30 and Oct. 12, Erickson who garnered the award Oct. 19 and Nov. 23 and Vichorek was selected for the honor Oct. 26.

Ellisor posted 25 points in the Bemidji State men’s basketball team’s 85-72 home victory against Minnesota Duluth Tuesday. The victory helped the Beavers improve to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play--a record that places them alone in fourth in the conference standings. Ellisor shot 10-for-15 (66.7%) from the field, went 1-for-2 from beyond the arc and 4-for-7 (57.1%) from the charity stripe. He added five rebounds, three assists and one steal, while committing just one turnover in 28 minutes of play.

His 20.3 points per game leads all NSIC players.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is the third of the season for Ellisor and for the BSU men’s basketball team. He was also selected for the honor Nov. 23 and Nov. 30.

The No. 8/10 Bemidji State women’s hockey team returns to Sanford Center Jan. 6-7 to host Minnesota State University for a WCHA two-game series.  The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m. each night.
