Erickson and Tesdahl garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Emily Erickson (Jr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) and Bryce Tesdahl (Sr., G, Crosby, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Jan. 9-14.

Erickson tallied three goals against Ohio State as the BSU women’s hockey team picked up a series split against the Buckeyes. Erickson’s goal at the 17:07 mark in the second proved to be the game-winner in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Ohio State. She also tallied an empty netter with four seconds remaining in game. In addition, she potted a goal in Friday’s 5-3 loss to Ohio State. Erickson’s third period goal helped the Beavers stage a comeback bid that ultimately fell short.

Erickson’s goals helped her move up the career charts at Bemidji State. She is now tied for 10th all-time in points and tied for fifth in goals with 35.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the third of the season for Erickson and the eighth occasion a member of the BSU women’s hockey team has been recognized for the award in 2011-12. Erickson was also selected for the honor Oct. 19 and Nov. 23. She follows last week’s honoree Danielle Williams (So., F, Waconia, Minn.), the Jan. 4 recipient Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba), Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.), who earned the honor Nov. 30 and Oct. 12 and Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) the Oct. 26 selection.

Tesdahl established a career-high and 2011-12 NSIC-best 12 assists in the BSU men’s basketball team’s 100-77 victory against Concordia University, St. Paul Jan. 14. The career mark also sits tied for second on BSU’s single game assists chart. Tesdahl recorded nine assists in the 72-70 loss to No. 21 St. Cloud State University Friday for 21 (10.5 apg) total assists on the weekend. Also in the loss to SCSU he hit the game tying shot with 29 seconds to go before the Huskies found a bucket that left just 0.7 on the clock. He committed only one turnover on the weekend for an impressive 21.0 assist/turnover ratio. Tesdahl improved on his league leading assist and assist/turnover ratio numbers, now with 5.6 assists per game and a 3.1 ratio.

Also on the weekend Tesdahl averaged 5.5 points per game and totaled three steals in 34.0 minutes per game. He shot 5-for-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is the first of the season for Tesdahl and fifth for the BSU men’s basketball team. He follows James Ellisor (Sr., F, Glendale, Ariz.), who was selected for the honor Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Jan. 4 and Jan. 11.

The Bemidji State women’s hockey team returns to action this weekend as it heads to No. 1 University of Minnesota for a WCHA road series in Minneapolis, Minn.

The BSU men’s basketball team opens the second half of a four-game homestand Jan. 20-21 as Minnesota State University, Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State University visit BSU Gymnasium. The Jan. 20 game is set for 8 p.m., while the Jan. 21 contest is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
