Beavers placed No. 8 in NCAA Central Region Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since 2003-04 and just the third season in program history, the Bemidji State University men’s basketball team is ranked in the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, announced Thursday by the NCAA selection committee. With a 16-7 Division II record, the Beavers (17-7, 12-6 NSIC) were placed No. 8 in the first edition of the poll.

The central region is made up of teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). The top eight teams from the region will play in the NCAA Central Region Tournament March 10-13, hosted by the top seed. Winners of the NSIC and RMAC postseason tournaments receive automatic bids, with the remaining six spots filled by teams that earn at-large bids.

Winona State University ranks No. 1 and guides the NSIC that has seven teams in the top 10; St. Cloud State University at No. 4, Minnesota State University Moorhead at No. 5, Southwest Minnesota State University at No. 6, BSU at No. 8, Augustana College at No. 9 and University of Minnesota Duluth at No. 10. RMAC’s Colorado School of Mines and Metropolitan State University own the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectfully, while Adams State College is No. 7.

The 2003-04 Bemidji State team was NSIC regular season champions and were in the regional rankings four consecutive weeks before earning an NCAA at-large bid at No. 7. The team had a regional mark as high as No. 7. The 1993-94 squad was the only other team at BSU to appear in the regional rankings, earning its highest ranking at No. 8.

The Beavers are having a record-setting season with a 17-7 overall record. The squad became the 14th team in program history to reach 17 wins and with four regular season games remaining have an opportunity to reach the program record of 20 wins, set by the 2003-04 team. BSU has posted at least a four-game winning streak on three occasions this season and haven’t lost back-to-back games - 6-0 after a loss.

BSU closes the road portion of its regular season schedule at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State University, Mankato Feb. 17-18.
