Vichorek and Ellisor earn Beaver Pride Player of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University athletes Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) and James Ellisor (F, 6-5, 195, Sr., Glendale, Ariz.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Feb. 13-19.
Vichorek notched a goal and four assists versus St. Cloud State to lead the Bemidji State women’s hockey team to a 6-1 victory Feb. 18. The blueliner had a role in four of BSU’s school-record five power-play goals against the Huskies. Vichorek’s shots from the point helped lead to three power-play goals while another shot got past the SCSU defense and Husky goaltender Taylor VanDenakker. Vichorek missed Friday’s game due to an interview for pharmacy school. She flew back from Denver in time for Saturday’s game. Her five-point night ranks second all-time at BSU for points scored in a single game.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the second of the season for Vichorek and the 10th for a member of the BSU women’s ice hockey team in 2011-12.  Vichorek, who also garnered the award Oct. 26, follows last week’s selection Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia), Emily Erickson (Jr., F. Coleraine, Minn.), who is a three-time recipient (Oct. 19, Nov. 23 and Jan. 18), the Jan. 11 pick Danielle Williams (So., F, Waconia, Minn.), Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba), who was the Jan. 4 selection, and Erika Wheelhouse (Jr., D, Crookston, Minn.), who earned the honor Nov. 30 and Oct. 12.

Ellisor averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game leading the BSU men’s basketball team to a 2-0 NSIC road weekend at Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato, while becoming BSU’s 15th player to reach 1,000 career points. He shot 58.6 percent from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the charity stripe in 35.5 minutes per game. He posted his NSIC-best third 30 point game Feb. 18 in the 78-64 victory against the Mavericks. He scored 30 points on 10-for-17 (58.8%) shooting from the field, 1-for-2 (50%) from 3-point land and 9-for-9 from the free throw line.

For his efforts, Ellisor was also recognized by the league as this week’s NSIC Player of the Week.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is the sixth of the season for Ellisor and eighth for the BSU men’s basketball team. In addition to being selected Nov. 23, Nov. 30, Jan. 4, Jan. 11 and Jan. 25, Ellisor is joined by Bryce Tesdahl (Sr., G, Crosby, Minn.) who was the Jan. 18 selection and Feb. 28 selection Dermaine Crockrell (Jr., G, Mesa, Ariz.).

The BSU women’s hockey team will travel to the University of North Dakota for the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) playoffs Feb. 24-26 with a trip to the WCHA Final Faceoff up for grabs. Sixth-seeded Bemidji State (17-15-3-0; 11-15-2 WCHA) will face North Dakota (16-9-3-0; 20-10-3 WCHA), which is the third-seed, in a rematch of a 2011 playoff series. The series is a best-of-three format commencing at 2:37 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The second game of the series is set for 2:37 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 and if needed, a third game will be played at 2:37 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.

The Beavers men’s basktball team is 19-7 overall record (one shy of BSU’s program record) and 14-6 in NSIC play (tying BSU’s record for conference wins). The NSIC mark places BSU second in the league standings with the opportunity to win at least a share of the league championship with two victories this weekend at home against Upper Iowa University Friday at 8 p.m. and Winona State University Saturday at 6 p.m. A win Friday against UIU secures an NSIC Tournament first round home game.
