BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Emily Erickson (F, Sr., Coleraine, Minn.) and Zach Noreen (F, 6-6, 255, Jr., Avon, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of Nov. 12-18.
Erickson led the BSU women’s ice hockey team in its Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series with University of North Dakota Nov. 17-18 having a hand in three of the Beavers; four goals (2g-1a). The senior ended a personal 12-game streak without a goal Saturday in a 3-1 loss, before posting a goal and an assist Sunday as the Beavers fell 7-3. In addition, the Coleraine, Minn. native blocked a shot.
Erickson’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for the senior, while it is the second time a member of the women’s hockey team has been honored in 2012-13. She follows goaltender Abby Ryplanski (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba), who was selected for the award Oct. 24.
Noreen guided the Bemidji State men's basketball team to a 1-1 start to the 2012-13 season with 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game on 55.0 percent shooting from the field (11-for-20) and 62.5 percent shooting from 3-point land (5-for-8). He also added three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in 24.0 minutes per game. In a 76-49 victory over University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Friday, Noreen led the team with a career-high 16 points and tied for the team-lead in rebounds with five. He shot 4-for-5 (80%) from beyond the arc to propel BSU to a 10-for-18 (55.6%) evening from 3-point range. Noreen's rebound total and field goals made (6) each tied a career-best, while his 3-pointers made established a new career-high for the junior. He scored a team-high 11 points on 5-for-10 (50%) shooting from the field in the loss to No. 5 Metro State University Saturday.
This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first of Noreen’s career and the first time a member of the men’s basketball team has been recognized by the organization this season.
