Beaver Pride names Althoff and Lutes Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Jessie Althoff (F, Sr., Becker, Minn.) and Brock Lutes (G, Jr., Portland, Ore.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week, after recording outstanding athletic performances between Dec. 29 and Jan. 4.

Althoff averaged 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game to help the BSU women's basketball team to a 1-1 home weekend Jan 3-4. After leading the team with 10 points in a loss to Winona State University, she posted a 7-for-13 (53.8%) effort from the field to record 14 points in a win against Upper Iowa University. In the win, she added six rebounds, an assist, steal and a block. In 63 minutes she recorded just two turnovers.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season and the fifth of 2013-14 for a member of the BSU women’s basketball team. Morgan Lee (G, Sr., Hayward, Wis.) earned the honor Nov. 20 and Dec. 11, while Kate Warmack (C, Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn.), was selected by the organization Dec. 6 and Dec. 18.

Lutes averaged 20.5 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game for the men’s basketball team, while shooting 55.2 percent from the field in a 1-1 NSIC home weekend Jan. 3-4. He posted 11 points and a season-high eight assists in an overtime loss to Winona State, but tied his season-high with 30 points the next night versus Upper Iowa. Against the Peacocks, the junior went 12-for-16 (75%) from the field, 2-for-2 from long range and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He also added eight rebounds and four assists. The 12 field goals made tied an NSIC-high this season, while he became the only player in the league in 2013-14 to have two 30-plus point performances.

This week’s honor marks the first of Lutes’ career, while it is the third of 2013-14 for a member of the BSU men’s basketball team. He joins teammates Zach Noreen (F, Sr., Avon, Minn.), the Nov. 27 recipient, and Maxie Rosenbloom (F, Sr., St. Paul, Minn.), the Dec. 11 award winner.

The Bemidji State men’s basketball team (8-4, 5-3 NSIC) takes to the road for the first time in 2014 when it travels to Augustana College (9-5, 6-2 NSIC) and Wayne State College (6-6, 3-5 NSIC) Jan. 10-11 for a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games. Friday’s contest against Augie is set for a 8 p.m. start, while Saturday’s game at WSC is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.

The Bemidji State women’s basketball team (7-5, 3-5 NSIC) is on the road Jan. 10-11, as it also travels to Augustana (8-4, 4-4 NSIC) and No. 11 Wayne State (14-1, 7-1 NSIC) for two NSIC tests. BSU and Augie are set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday, while Saturday’s contest versus the Wildcats is slatted for a 4 p.m. start.
