Basketball programs to begin practice for 2016-17 season

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University men’s and women’s basketball programs will begin practice for the 2016-17 season on Saturday, Oct. 15 at BSU Gymnasium. Both programs start their respective seasons with exhibition matchups against Division I programs.

The men’s basketball program, led by fifth year head coach Mike Boschee, begin the season on Friday, Oct. 28 with a road exhibition game at 7 p.m. against University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. BSU then finishes its exhibition games with a matchup at University of Minnesota at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 in Minneapolis, Minn. The regular season begins Nov. 11 and 12 with neutral-site games against Lindenwood University and University of Central Missouri, respectively. Bemidji State opens home action Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. against Northland College.

Beavers Men’s Hoops returns four starters, including senior forward Ben Best, senior forward Will Harvey, junior guard Christian Pekarek and senior forward Shane White. Seven newcomers join the squad, five freshmen from Wisconsin, one freshman from Minnesota and one junior from Michigan.

The women’s basketball program, led by second year head coach Chelsea DeVille, open its season with an exhibition on Thursday, Nov. 3 against North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D. Bemidji State follows up with its regular season opener at home on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. against Mayville State University.

Beavers Women’s Hoops returns six starters from last season, including senior guard Allison Cordes, junior center Katie Miller, senior guard Aimee Pelzer, junior center Sierra Senske, senior guard Tatum Sheley and senior guard Hanna Zerr. The program brings on seven newcomers, one freshman from Kansas, three juniors from Minnesota, one freshman from North Dakota, one freshman from South Dakota and one freshman from Wisconsin.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
