Thompson records second double-double of exhibition season at Jackrabbits

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Sophomore forward Derek Thompson recorded his second double-double of the Bemidji State University men’s basketball exhibition season Saturday afternoon following an 86-63 loss at South Dakota State University. Thompson finished with 15 points and a team-high 13 rebounds while junior forward Logan Bader led BSU with 16 points.

Bader scored BSU’s first five points of the game, including a 3-pointer to start the game for the Beavers. Junior guard Ja Morgan also put in a 3-pointer four minutes into play to tie the game, 8-8. After a 4-0 run by the Jackrabbits, the Beavers would trail for the remainder of the game.

An 11-0 run over a three-minute span put SDSU’s lead at 13 points, 26-13, before BSU went on a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to four points, 29-25. Bemidji State gave the ball away on eight turnovers in the first half, allowing South Dakota State to score 14 points off turnovers and hold a 48-36 lead at the half. Morgan led the Beavers with nine points in the first half followed by Thompson and Bader with eight. Thompson also added seven rebounds in the first half to set himself up for a double-double.

Bader and Thompson continue to battle to the basket in the second half, leading the team with eight and seven points, respectively, in the period. The Jackrabbits’ .419 field goal percentage (13-31) along with a .923 free throw percentage (12-13) helped the home squad control the game and go on for the exhibition win.

Bemidji State tips off the regular season at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 against Oak Hills Christian College. The Beavers will host Bemidji Youth Basketball Night, as children from across the community will play games before, during halftime and after the BSU game.
