Huskies bite Bemidji State in second overtime, 107-101

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- After going toe-to-toe for 45 minutes, St. Cloud State University scored the first six points of the second overtime period and would not look back gaining a 107-101 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Bemidji State University Saturday at the BSU Gymnasium.

The Huskies were led by Gage Davis, who was 15-of-25 from the floor and 11-for-12 at the free throw line for 42 points and eight rebounds in 49 minutes. Diamond Onwuka added six points and a game-high 16 rebound.

Ja Morgan posted a BSU-best 24 points before fouling out of the game 3:35 into the first overtime. Max Bjorklund added 17 points and a game-high and career-best 10 assists, while Logan Bader posted 15 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double of he season.

The Beavers opened the game on fire, draining seven straight attempts from the floor to take an 18-11 lead with just over 14 minutes to play in the half.

The Huskies countered with an 8-0 run during a span of 2:39 to take the lead, 21-20 with 9:56 before the half. SCSU finished the first 20 minutes shooting 48.4-percent from the floor, which included a 6-for-14 run from beyond the arc (42.9) to extend its lead to 42-37 at halftime.

Bemidji State opened the second half trailing by five points, but used a 7-0 run early to tie the game at 44-44. During the remaining 18:18 of regulation, the score was tied on eight occasions finally capped by a free throw by Morgan with 1:56 left to tie the score at 83-83 and push the game to overtime.

During the first OT period, SCSU stretched its lead to four points twice, but Derek Thompson tipped in a shot with 11 seconds left to finish a 5-1 run by the Beavers to knot the score at 94-94.  SCSU's Davis had a chance to win the game with a shot from beyond the arc with five seconds left, but Logan Longo pulled down a defensive board to extend the game to a second overtime.

Davis started the second overtime with a jumper to spark a 6-0 run and would go 4-for-4 from the line as the Huskies drained 7-for-8 down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.

Bemidji State, now 4-7 overall and 1-6 in NSIC play, hits the road for a pair of NSIC contests Jan. 11-12. The Beaver open the weekend of play at MSU Moorhead Friday for a 7:30 p.m. opening tip off, while the team will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
