Long range attack lifts Beavers to 73-58 win over Golden Bears

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- The Bemidji State University men’s basketball program put up an attack from beyond the arc Friday night to lift the squad to a 73-58 win over Concordia University-St. Paul at BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers combined for 17 3-pointers to lift their record to 8-13 overall and 5-12 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Bemidji State overcame a 20-10 deficit nearly eight minutes into the game with a 10-2 run, led by junior guard Logan Longo with four points during the stretch. The Golden Bears held on to its two-point lead heading into halftime, which slipped away early in the second half.

Sophomore Derek Thompson scored the first five points of the second half, giving BSU its first lead of the game since early in the first half. The Golden Bears took the lead back once soon after but three consecutive 3-pointers by junior forward Logan Bader, junior guard Ja Morgan and Thompson gave the Beavers its final lead of the night. The long range balls were part of a 14-2 run over a five-minute stretch midway through the second half.

The run gave BSU a 51-42 lead while the defense flexed its muscles to hold CSP without a field goal over a six-minute span until 1:09 remaining in the game. Sophomore guard Jacob Hoffman hit his fifth and final 3-pointer of the night to extend the BSU lead to double-figures before Bader sealed the win with his second long range ball of the game.

Hoffman led the squad with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Griffin Chase, making his first start of the season, followed with 14 points while Morgan neared triple-double numbers with 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Bader finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Bemidji State shot 40.3 percent (25-62) from the field and 45.9 percent (17-37) from long range, coming three 3-pointers away from tying the program’s single-game record. The Beavers gave away just five turnovers and scored 15 points off seven Golden Bears’ turnovers.
