Bader double-double, Morgan 20-point game lifts Beavers over Tritons, 72-66

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (McArthur Center) -- The senior duo of Logan Bader and Ja Morgan helped the Bemidji State University men’s basketball team close out the Eckerd College Classic Saturday night with a 72-66 win over the host school, Eckerd College. Bader finished with his sixth career double-double while Morgan led the Beavers in scoring with 21 points.

The Tritons controlled the scoreboard early while taking an 8-5 lead six minutes into the game. In quick fashion, the Beavers answered back to take their second lead of the game with a 9-0 run in just over one minute of game action. BSU built its lead to nine, 22-13, as senior guard Ja Morgan and sophomore guard Max Bjorklund hit one 3-pointer each followed by a layup by senior forward Logan Bader. Bemidji State’s lead was cut in to after a cold spell from the field, shooting 3-of-15 from the floor with five turnovers given away in the last 10 minutes before halftime.

The Beavers’ shooting woes were fixed out of the break as the team shot 5-of-6 from the field, including a 10-0 run, to regain its nine-point lead, 42-33. Another scoreless streak hit BSU just after Wagner’s fifth and sixth points of the game that allowed EC to climb to within one point. Wagner and Morgan hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the scoreless streak and extend the squad’s lead. The Tritons continued to fight while reaching within one point two minutes after and tying the game, 53-53, with 7:32 to play.

Wagner, who scored all of his 14 points in the second half, hit back-to-back 3-pointers to create separation again. Bemidji State’s defense held off Eckerd through the final minutes of action, only allowing the Tritons to reach within two points twice. The final threat against BSU came with 24 seconds as EC converted an and-one layup to cut its deficit to 68-66. The Beavers held off two Triton 3-pointers following the and-one while also going 4-of-4 from the free throw line to end the game.

Bader, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, leads all active Beavers in career double-doubles. He accounted for nine of his boards in the first half.  Morgan ended the day with a team-high 21 points with six rebounds and six assists.

Bemidji State shot 40.7 percent from the field with 13 3-pointers compared to 35.6 percent shooting and six 3-pointers for Eckerd. BSU led the game with 42 rebounds while both teams scored 12 points off turnovers and 22 points in the paint.
