Mike Iseman enters his second season as an assistant coach of the Bemidji State University men's basketball team in 2019-20. Prior to coming to BSU, he served two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D.
During a shortened season due to COVID-19, Boschee and the Beavers went 7-9 overall and 6-8 in conference games during the 2020-21 season. BSU closed out the final six games of the regular season 5-1 to finish fifth in the NSIC North Division standings. The Beavers opened the season with a 74-59 win at Minnesota State University, Mankato and closed it with a 109-85 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston, which included a single-game record of 45 points scored by senior forward Derek Thompson. Thompson earned his second career selection to the All-NSIC Second Team and also earned NSIC North Division Player of the Week following his record-setting weekend against UMC. Thompson and senior guard Griffin Chase each earnd their third career selections to the NSIC All-Academic Team while junior forward Cody Landwehr was selected to the NSIC All-Academic Team for the second time.
The Beavers continued its trek back to the top of the NSIC after finishing the season 14-13 overall and 11-11 in conference play following the 2019-20 season. BSU opened its season with back-to-back 100-point games for the second time in program history and began the conference season with a 5-2 record over the first seven games. Included in the Beavers' hot start to the NSIC schedule was a 75-73 win over No. 21 Augustana at BSU Gymnasium. BSU also ended the season hot while taking six wins over its final seven regular-season games, including an 83-76 win over (RV) University of Minnesota Duluth. Senior forward Logan Bader and junior forward Derek Thompson each joined the 1,000-point club late in the season while junior guard Nick Wagner set the program single-season record with 80 3-pointers made. Thompson earned a selection to the All-NSIC Second Team while Wagner and senior guard Ja Morgan were named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, tying a single-season high for all-conference selections since 2012-13.
Iseman helped the Beavers back to the Sanford Pentagon for the second round of the NSIC Tournament after taking down No. 1 seed Minnesota State on the road in the opening round, 66-56. The NSIC Tournament win was the first for the program since the 2012-13 season. Four Beaver student-athletes were selected to the 2018-19 Winter NSIC All-Academic Team which tied the most selected to the squad under Boschee. Junior guard Ja Morgan recorded the second-most assists in a single season with 180, falling just three shy of tying the program record. Morgan led the NSIC in assists per game and ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore forward Derek Thompson ranked fifth in the league in field goal percentage while sophomore guard Jacob Hoffman ranked third in three-point field goal percentage.
Iseman, a native of Archie, Mo., helped lead the Jimmies to the 2017 North Star Athletic Association regular-season conference championship. Jamestown followed with a 20-win season for the first time since the 2014-15 season to finish second in the NSAA conference standings. Iseman was involved in recruiting, skill development, strength and conditioning, and opponent scouting with Jamestown.
Prior to joining the Jamestown coaching staff, Iseman spent the 2015-16 season as an assistant coach at Central College (Iowa), leading the Dutch to a conference title and a berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament. He was also a two-time letter winner at Central College and was a team captain during his senior season in 2014-15. In 2014, Central won the conference championship and played in the NCAA DIII National Tournament.
Iseman graduated from Central College in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in business management.
