Mavericks hold off BSU charge to nab NSIC Championship

LAKE CITY, Minn. (The Jewel Golf Course) -- For the third consecutive day the Bemidji State University men's golf team brought the low round in to The Jewel Golf Course clubhouse, but the Beavers' 286 (+2) on day five of the 2010 NSIC Championships was not enough as Minnesota State University held off the BSU charge to take the team title by seven strokes.

Bemidji State did manage to bring home some hardware as Jesse Nelson (Jr., Pine River, Minn.) finished third in the five-round event with a 77-74-72-73-70--366 (+9), just one stroke out of medallist position, while teammate Chris Curb (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) carded a 73-76-69-74-76--368 (+11) to claim fifth place overall. Both BSU student-athletes earned All-NSIC Team accolades for their performances.

The unique conference tournament is comprised of five 18-hole rounds spread over six months. The first two rounds of the event took place Oct. 4-5, 2009 at Hastings Country Club in Hastings, Minn. with the final three rounds of the 90-hole championship played at The Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, Minn.

The Beavers opened play this spring 23 strokes off the lead at 309-305--614 (+38) after the first two rounds of championship play last fall. BSU took care of business Friday carding the best team total of the day 284 (E) to trim three strokes off MSU's lead. Saturday, the team again garnered low round honors recording a 288 (+4) to come within nine strokes of the lead with just 18 holes to play. But the Mavericks bounced back after a 299 (+15) round Saturday to post a 288 (+4) in the final round. Although the Beavers' bested MSU with a fifth-round total of 286 (+2), it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit and the Mavericks escaped with their second consecutive NSIC crown and seventh since 1955.

The runner-up finish for the Beavers marked the sixth straight year BSU finished second at the conference championship meet.

Jim Foss (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) continued his assault on the par-71, 6,539-yard Jewel Golf Course posting a three-under-par 68 on the final day of competition to bring his total for the three rounds this spring to 69-70-68--207 (-6) to leave him just one stroke from All-NSIC honors in seventh place.

The Beavers' spring season is now in full swing. During the next seven days, BSU will participate in three different events taking it as far as Onalaska, Wis. BSU opens the busy week with a triangular versus St. Cloud State University and St. John's University at Territory Golf Course in St. Cloud, Minn. on Wednesday. Friday the team will host University of Minnesota, Crookston for a duel competition at the Bemidji Town and Country Club before the teams head east to participate in the Winona State University Invitational April 18-19.
