Johnson wins Twin Cities Classic
WAYZATA, Minn. (Wayzata Country Club) -- Bemidji State University junior Justin Johnson (Roseau, Minn.) fired a one-under-par 71 at the par-72, 7,095-yard Wayzata Country Club Monday to wrap up play at the 2010 Twin Cities Classic and lay claim to individual medallist honors with a 54-hole total of  68-75-71--214 (-2). The junior’s stellar play helped the Beavers to finish fifth in the 18-team event.

At two-under-par for the tournament, Johnson held a two stroke lead over the rest of the field and was the only participant to finish the event under par.

The individual title stands as the first of his collegiate career and the first medallist award for the BSU men this season.

Buoyed by Johnson’s red-hot play, the Beavers posted a 307 in the final round for a team total of 297-304-307--908 (+44) to climb up a spot to sit fifth in the final team standings.

Illinois Wesleyan College took top team honors with 296-287-299--882 (+18) increasing their lead over Carthage College to nine strokes (306-289-298--893; +29).  Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe St. Cloud State University took third place with 290-297-306--893 (+29).

In addition to Johnson, BSU’s Garrett Nelson (Jr., Baudette, Minn.) carded a 74    -75-78--227 (+11) for a share of 23rd place, Danny Menton (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) finished tied for 31st (73-78-78--229    ; +13), Matthew Haugstad (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) finished locked in a tie for 70th place (82-77-80--239; +23) and Kevin Larson (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) rounded out the BSU quintet tied for 86th individually (82-74-84--243; +27).

The final round of the Twin Cities Classic draws the curtain on the fall portion of the 2010-11 golf season.  The Beavers will break for the winter months and return to action March 26-27 when they travel to Wayne, Neb. to participate in the Wayne State Invitational.
