Haugstad leads Bemidji State rally at Wayne State Spring Invite
WAYNE, Neb. (Wayne Country Club) -- Led by a one-over-par 73 by Matt Haugstad (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) Saturday the Bemidji State University men’s golf team trimmed 18 strokes from its first round total and moved into second place in the Wayne State Spring Invitational .  The event took place at the 6,407-yard, par-72 Wayne Country Club in Wayne, Neb.

The Beavers fired a team total of 301 during the final day of competition to finish 33 shots off the pace set by Wayne State College with 319-301--620 (+44) and claim a one-stroke edge over University of Minnesota, Crookston (317-304--621 (+45)).  

Haugstad improved his score ten strokes from Friday’s opening round to Saturday’s final round carding a BSU-low, one-over-par 73.  He finished tied for 14th place with 83-73--156 (+12).  After leading the Beavers Friday, Garrett Nelson (Jr., Baudette, Minn.) turned in a 75 (+3)on day two to finish tied for sixth place with 76-75--151 (+4) and lead BSU in the 36-hole invitational.

Led by the duo of Adam Fields and Tyler DeJong, the hosting Wildcats took top team honors after finishing 11-over-par 298-289--587.  Field earned medallist honors completing the event as the only player to post a score under par with 73-70--143 (-1) and grabbed a three shot lead over teammate DeJong who registered a two-round total of 73-73--146 (+2).

In addition to Nelson and Haugstad, BSU’s Justin Johnson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) recorded a 78-74--152 (+8) to tie for eighth place, while Danny Menton (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) tied for 21st at 17-over-par (82-79--161).  Senior captain Jim Foss (Roseau, Minn.) rounded out the team in 30th place with 87-79--166 (+22).

The BSU men’s golf team will be back in action Monday and Tuesday when it travels to Ankeny, Iowa to participate in the Upper Iowa Spring Invitational.
