Beavers claim Cedar Valley Spring Invitational honors

WATERLOO, IOWA (Sunnyside Country Club) -- On the strength of a one-two finish by brothers Casey Hill (Jr., Virginia, Minn.) and Tyler Hill (Jr., Virginia, Minn.), the Bemidji State University men’s golf team earned the 2011 Cedar Valley Spring Invitational title at Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa Today.  C. Hill fired a two-over-par 74 Tuesday to garner medallist honors.
 
C. Hill’s 36-hole total of 76-74-150 (+6) was good for a two-stroke lead over a pair of competitors, including teammate T. Hill, at eight-over-par (152) to claim medallist honors.  The junior’s performance also paced a BSU contingent that extended its lead over the field to 18 strokes as it turned in a 306 on day to for a total of 311-306--617 to garner the team championship at 41-over-par.
 
“This is really an exciting win for us,” said BSU head coach Ekren Miller.  “The guys worked really hard in the off season and it is really nice to see the results.

“Casey and Tyler Hill are both great golfers.  They are consistent, made a lot of birdies today and keep their cool on the course.  They are great examples of Beaver golf.”

Future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) member University of Sioux Falls carded a day-two low 304 and the event host Upper Iowa University turned in a 306 to tie for second place in the 10-team invitational at 635 (+59).

In addition to C. Hill and T. Hill, BSU’s senior captain Jim Foss (Roseau, Minn.) fired an 80 (+8) Tuesday to slip from the lead after 18 holes to a tie for sixth with 75-80--155 (+11), while Justin Johnson (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) finished locked in a tie for 26th place with 81-82--163 (+19). Garrett Nelson (Jr., Baudette, Minn.) rounded out the Beavers’ team score tied for 38th place at 21-over-par (86-79--165).

Danny Menton (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) and Matt Haugstad (Jr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) also competed in the event as individuals and finished tied for 17th and 26th with scores of 84-77--161 (+17) and 84-79--163 (+19), respectively.

The Beavers return to action this weekend when they travel to The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. for the final three rounds of the 2010-11 NSIC Championship.  The unique conference tournament is comprised of five 18-hole rounds spread over six months. The first two rounds were set at Troy Burne Golf Course in Hudson, Wis.  

BSU finished the fall portion of the championship in 10th place (324-319--643 (+75)) 44 shots off the pace set by Minnesota State University, Mankato, which totaled 305-294--599 (+31) in the first 36 holes.
