BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University golf team split to participate in two events Sunday and Monday and remains in contention to claim team titles in both after the first day of competition.
The Beavers’ top five golfers traveled to Hudson Wis. to participate in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Fall Preview at Troy Burne Golf Course and share the lead with Concordia University-St. Paul after carding a 304 (+20), while the remainder of the Bemidji State squad stayed home to host the BSU Invitational and sits just two strokes off the lead after 18 holes with a 311 (+23) at Bemidji Town and Country Club.
Newcomers John Hafdal (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Andrew Benson (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) turned in matching scores of four-over-par (75) at the par 71, 6,774-yard Troy Burne Golf Course to lead the Beavers on Day 1 as all five BSU golfers were among the top 22 scores.
The Beavers and Golden Bears hold a one-shot edge over third-place St. Cloud State University (305 (+21)) and two stokes over Minnesota State University, Mankato (306 (+22)), which is in fourth.
University of Minnesota, Crookston participant Matt McClure leads all individuals after 18 holes, carding an even 71.
At the Bemidji Town and Country Club, Garrett Nelson (Sr.. Baudette, Minn.) turned in a three-over-par 75 to pace Bemidji State and sit in a tie for second as the Beavers (311 (+23)) are just two strokes off the leads set by Northern State University (309 (+21)).
Northern State’s Miles Schock fired a 72 (E) on Day 1 and holds a three-stroke lead over the field for top individual honors.
The final round of the BSU Invitational gets underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at Bemidji Town and Country Club. The final 18 holes of the NSIC Fall Preview is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. at Troy Burne Golf Course.
