LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (Wigwam Resort Gold Course) -- The Bemidji State University men’s golf team opened the 2012 NCAA Division II Central/West Super Regional with an 11-over-par 299 to sit 11th Monday. The 54-hole event is being held at the par-72, 7,132-yard Gold Course at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The event continues with an 18-hole round tomorrow and will conclude with the championship 18 Wednesday.  The top five teams and two individuals not participating with a team at the super regional will advance to the 2012 Division II Spring Championships Festival May 15-19 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

California State University, Chico leads the field of 20 teams after carding a staggering 15-under-par 273 on the first day of competition. With three of the top ten scores on the leader board after 18 holes, the Wildcats take a 10-stroke lead into competition tomorrow.

California State University, Stanislaus and Colorado School of Mines each recorded a 283 (-5) to share second place, while Grand Canyon University is in fourth at three-under par (285).

The Beavers, one of four teams hailing from the Norther Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) participating in the event, are 26 strokes off the lead with 36 holes to go, but just nine shots separate BSU from fifth place and a shot at extending its season further.

St. Cloud State University is the top NSIC team after day one after carding a 296 (+8) to tie for eighth place, while Minnesota State University, Mankato is 15th (306/+18) and Concordia University-St. Paul rounds out the field in 20th (319/+31).

Individually, Kyle Souza of Chico State fired a seven-under-par 65 to sit atop the leader board after 18 holes.

Danny Menton (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) leads BSU and sits 15th individually after recording a one-under-par 71.  In addition Menton’s teammates Casey Hill (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) is 26th overall with 73 (+1), Andrew Benson (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) is 66th at 77 (+5), John Hafdal (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) posted a 78 (+6) to sit 76 and Matt Haugstad (Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) finished 104th with a 10-over-par 82.

Super Regional play begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CST).
