Bemidji State ninth after 36 holes of Super Regional play

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. (Wigwam Resort Gold Course) -- With 36 holes in the books, the Bemidji State University men’s golf team sits ninth among the 2012 NCAA Division II Central/West Super Regional field at 21-over-par (299-298--597). The Beavers trimmed one stroke from their day one total (299) and carded a 298 (+10) Tuesday at the par-72, 7,132-yard Golf Course at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

Sparked by an eagle on the first hole of the day, Danny Menton (Sr., Hutchinson, Minn.) fired his second consecutive one-under-par 71 to lead BSU an sit tied for ninth individually at -2 (71-71=142).

With just 18 holes remaining, the Beavers trail event leader California State University, Chico (273-294--567) by 30 strokes.  Chico State owns a three-shot lead over Colorado School of Mines, which each sits at five-under-par (283-288--571), with Grand Canyon University two strokes behind at three-under-par (285-287--573).

Jim Knous of Colorado School of Mines, fired a blistering 70 (-2) Tuesday to grab a one-stroke edge over the field, owning the top spot on the leader board at -8 (66-70--136) for the tournament.

The event wraps up with a final 18-hole round tomorrow.  

The top five teams and two individuals not participating with a team at the super regional will advance to the 2012 Division II Spring Championships Festival May 15-19 at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

In addition to Menton, BSU’s Casey Hill (Sr., Virginia, Minn.) turned in a 73 (+2) on day two for a 36-hole total of 73-73-146 (+2) and holds down a portion of 18th place, Andrew Benson (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Matt Haugstad (Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn.) recorded matching five-over-par 77s on day two. Benson is tied for 70th at 77-77--154 (+10) and Haugstad is tied for 93 with 82-77--159 (+15), while John Hafdal (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) posted a seven-over par 79 and is tied for 86th with 78-79--157 (+13).

The final round of the 2012 Central/West Super Regional will get underway at 9:30 a.m. (CST) tomorrow with BSU playing the final five tee times of the day.  Haugstad gets he team stated at 2:50 p.m. (CST) and Menton’s final group is set to tee off at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
