BRAINERD, Minn. (The Classic at Madden's) -- The Bemidji State University men's golf team turned in a 326 (+38) Tuesday at The Classic at Madden's in Brainerd, Minn. and cling to seventh place midway through the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship.
Paced by a four-over-par 76 by Andrew Benson (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) the Beavers finished with the fifth-best score of round two at and finished the first 36 holes of the championship at 78-over-par with 654 (328-326). BSU claimed sole possession of seventh place, but remains only four strokes out of fourth place.
St. Cloud State University, the leader after round one with a 307 (+19), saw its day two total swell to 317 (+29) but at 624 (+48) continues to hold an eight-stroke lead over University of Sioux Falls (315-317--632/+56). Augustana College holds down third place with 640 (+64) and Minnesota State University, Mankato and Minot State University are tied for fourth place at 75-over-par (651). Concordia University-St. Paul sits just one stroke ahead of BSU at 653 (322-321) in sixth place.
Jordan Mueller of USF owns a two-stroke lead for medalist honors at nine-over-par (71-82--153).
John Hafdal (So., Prior Lake, Minn.) leads all BSU participants tied for 14th places at 79-81--160 (+16). Benson sits tied for 23rd and freshman Brett Musich (International Falls, Minn.) is just one shot back (80-84--164) tied for 25th place. Nathan Brown (So., Binbrook, Ontario) rounded out the Beavers' team score with a 169 (84-85) to settle into a tie for 38th place in the field of 60 participants.
Tuesday's second round completes the first half of the unique 72-hole conference championship. The teams now break from competition and will reconvene April 13-14 to play the final 36 holes at the Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. to decide the 2012-13 NSIC Championship.
The Beavers return to action Oct. 15-16 to wrap up the fall portion of their 2012-13 campaign when they travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to compete in the MIAA/GAC Crossover at St. Joseph Country Club.
