MORAVIA, Iowa (The Preserve at Rathburn Lake) -- Led by a two-under-par, 142 by sophomore John Hafdal (So., Prior Lake, Minn.), the Bemidji State University men's golf team completed the 2013 Upper Iowa University Spring Invitational in fifth place at +13 (589).
Do to unseasonal weather conditions in the Fayette, Iowa area, tournament officials moved the event three hours south to Moravia, Iowa and the gamble paid off. Teams were treated to temperatures in the low- to mid-70s, sun and good course playing conditions at the 6,598-yard Preserve at Rathburn Lake.
Eight players in the field of nearly 60 finished the event under par and BSU's Hafdal was one of them. The sophomore finished the 36-hole event at two-under-par (142) after rounds of 70 (-2) and 73 (E). He was five shots off the pace set by individual medalist Casey Gleich, who fired a 70-67--137 (-7).
Hafdal also propelled the Beavers to fifth pace as a team. BSU's 589 (+13) was 12 stokes out of team title contention as Minnesota State University, Mankato grabbed top honors with a 286-291--577 (+1).
The Beavers return to action this weekend when they travel to Smithville, Mo. and Paradise Point Golf Complex to card the final 36 holes of the 2012-13 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championship.
