SMITHVILLE, Mo. (Paradise Pointe Golf Complex) -- Sophomore Sam Otto carded rounds of 78 (+6) and 74 (+2) to finish tied for 11th individually with an 8-over-par 152 and lead the Bemidji State University men's golf team to a sixth-place finish at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Spring Preview Saturday on the Outlaw Course at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex.
Bemidji State opened the event with a 315 (+27) to sit sixth, 17 shots behinds Augustana University (298/+10) after 18 holes Friday. Despite trimming 10 shots from its team score (305/+17), thanks to a team best 74 (+2) from Otto, Saturday, BSU was unable to make up any ground and finished the event sixth with a team score of 315-305—620 (+44).
Led by individual medalist Michael Schmitz’s even-par 144 (73-71), Winona State claimed the team title. The Warriors posted a day two-best 294 (+6) Saturday to inch up the leaderboard for a two-stroke edge over St. Cloud State University (301-296—597/+21) and the rest of the nine-team field. Augustana finished 12 shots back in fourth place (298-309—607/+31).
The Beavers return to action April 2-3 when they travel to Waterloo, Iowa and Sunnyside Country Club for the Upper Iowa University Spring Invitational.
