Nelson leads BSU Men’s Golf to top-10 finish at NSU Golf Classic

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Bemidji State University men’s golf senior Brandon Nelson shot even-par, 213 (69-72-72) at the three-round NSU Golf Classic Tuesday afternoon to lead the Beavers to a top-10 finish. The Beavers totaled a team score of 873 (292-293-288) to tie for eighth of 20 teams at the tournament and finished first among Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opponents.

For Nelson it was his best finish this season after tying for 12th individually and a new career-low 54-hole tournament score of 213. His low-round of 69 on day one tied for the second-lowest of his career. 

University of Central Missouri took home the team title after firing a total score of 847 (279-279-289) that was five-under par while Henderson State University finished four strokes back for second at one-under par 851 (286-281-284). Winona State University finished second among NSIC teams at the tournament, 20 strokes behind the Beavers at 893 (302-294-296).

Senior Tanner Sperling followed Nelson with a score of 220 (73-76-71) to tie for 44th individually while senior Chris Swenson was one stroke behind him at 221 (75-75-71) and tied for 51st individually. Junior Ben Corbid trailed Swenson by just one stroke as well with a score of 222 (75-71-76) to tie for 58th individually while freshman Koby Kuenzel rounded out the Beavers’ top five scorers with a score of 226 (77-75-74) and tied for 69th.

Sophomore Seth Schricker (72-82-76=23) and freshman Jack Southard (83-76-75=234) each competed as individuals at the tournament and tied for 85th and 99th, respectively.

Nelson and the Beaver will hope to carry this momentum into this weekend when they compete at the NSIC Championship in Kansas City, Mo., April 16-18.
