KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Bemidji State University men’s golf team improved by 19 strokes Saturday afternoon and leads the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men’s Golf Championship after the second day. The Beavers combined for a team score of 286 (+2) in the second round and hold the overall tournament lead by four strokes with a two-round score of 591 (305-286).

Senior Chris Swenson fired a two-under par 69 in today’s round and leads the tournament with a two-round score of 141 (72-69). Swenson is trailed by University of Sioux Falls’ Gavin Metz by two strokes (75-68=143) while Bemidji State junior Ben Corbid (73-72) is tied for third with Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Hunter Rebrovich (72-73) with a score of 145.

The Beavers hold a four-stroke advantage over Winona State University (301-294=595) and Sioux Falls (309-286) while Upper Iowa University trails in fourth at 603 (305-298).

Following Swenson and Corbid, freshman Koby Kuenzel shot an even-par 71 in round two and is tied for 14th individually with a total score of 151 (80-71). Seniors Brandon Nelson (80-76=156) and Tanner Sperling (82-74=156) round out the Beavers’ top five scorers and are each tied for 26th.

Bemidji State will aim for its 16th NSIC Team Championship and first since 2000 while Swenson and Corbid will compete to be the Beavers’ first individual champion since Mitch Mackedanz in 2008-09.

The third and final round will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start Sunday with the top five golfers will be named NSIC All-Tournament, while the team champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Central/Midwest Regional to be played at Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo., May 6-8.
