Seven goals send Beavers past University of Regina in exhibition

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team used seven goals Sunday night to gain an exhibition victory over University of Regina, 7-0. Jordan George (Jr., F, Madison, Wis.) and Matt Carlson (Jr., D, Grand Forks, N.D.) each had a goal and an assist on the night to lead BSU.

In all, 13 different Beavers found their way to the scoring column in the exhibition and seven players netted goals, including one from freshman Mitch Cain (F, Fort Frances, Ontario).

Senior Shea Walters (F, Hibbing, Minn.) got the Beavers on the board just 67 seconds into the game and BSU would never look back. Jamie MacQueen (Sr., F, St. Thomas, Ontario) added a one-time scoop past the UR goaltender from George and Brad Hunt (Sr., F, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) on the power play to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Bemidji State added two more in the second frame.  George literally skated circles around the Cougars picking up the puck on the left faceoff circle, taking it to the point and around to the right faceoff circle before burying a shot to give the Beavers a three-goal cushion at the 4:22 mark.  Carlson netted the Beavers’ fourth goal on an end-to-end individual effort play.  BSU caught the Cougars in a change and the Grand Forks, N.D. native found a seam, skated the puck into the zone, made two moves to shake the UR defense and slipped a backhand between Lucas Gore’s pads.

Up 4-0, BSU found the net three more times in the third period.

Kyle Brodie
(So., D, Northglenn, Colo.) picked off pass at the top of the slot and fired a wrister to the back of the net to get things started.  Cain, in his debut as a Beaver, was in the right place at the right time when a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle was redirected in front of the crease when it hit his skate.  And finally, Jeff Jubinville (So., F, Edmonton, Alberta) made the score 7-0 when he scored at the 17:19 of the third with help from Carlson and freshman forward Danny Mattson (Minneapolis, Minn.)

Bemidji State showed signs of promise in all aspects of the game.  MacQueen’s power-play marker made the Beavers 1-for-4 (.250) on the man advantage for the night and the Bemidji State penalty-kill held the Cougars scoreless on five power-play opportunities. In addition, BSU scored six event strength goals and the trio of Dan Bakala (Sr., G, Calgary, Alberta), Mathieu Dugas (Jr., G, L’Assomption, Quebec) and newcomer Andrew Walsh (Dawson Creek, British Columbia) combined for the 18-save shutout.  BSU also had two near-miss short-handed opportunities.

Bemidji State is now 12-5-1 in exhibition games since moving to the NCAA Division I level for the 1999-2000 season and is riding a streak of eight consecutive exhibition wins dating back to a 6-2 victory over the United States Under-18 Team Mar. 2, 2007.

The Beavers even their exhibition series with Regina, 2-2.

The Beavers commence regular-season play Oct. 7 in a nonconference game on the road versus Miami University (Ohio). The opener is set for 6:30 p.m. with the series finale slated for 6 p.m. the following evening.
