Walsh backstops BSU to 5-0 win over Lake Superior State

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University men's ice hockey team earned its first win of the 2012-13 season on Saturday night, shutting out future Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rival Lake Superior State University, 5-0. Goaltender Andrew Walsh (So., Dawson Creek, British Columbia) turned away all 25 shots he faced to earn his third career shutout, while five different players found the back of the net for BSU.

BSU carried the play in the first period and outshot the Lakers 13-5 in the frame. Senior Brance Orban (F, Lethbridge, Alberta) scored the Beavers' first goal of the season at the 6:57 mark when he buried a feed from Jeff Jubinville (Jr., F, Edmonton, Alberta).

Bemidji State struck again in the second when defenseman Sam Windle (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) unleashed a seeing-eye shot through traffic to earn his second career goal. Captain Ben Kinne (Sr., F, St. Paul, Minn.) was credited with an assist on the play, marking the first point of the young season.

In the final stanza, BSU poured on the offense to secure the nonconference series split. Freshmen Cory Ward (F, Las Vegas, Nev.) and Phil Brewer (F, Cambridge, Ontario) scored their first career goals 54 seconds apart to make it a 4-0 game before junior Radoslav Illo (F, Bystrica, Slovakia) capped the scoring with an unassisted marker with 1:55 left on the clock.

The point was Illo's second of the game, making him the only Beaver with multiple points on a night where nine BSU players got on the scoresheet. Bemidji State outshot LSSU 29-25 in the game and won despite going 0-for-4 on the power play. The Lakers came up empty on both of their man advantage opportunities.

The Beavers are now 1-1-0 in regular season play and open Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) action next at the University of Nebraska Omaha. The Beavers and Mavericks will get the series underway 7:37 p.m. Friday at CenturyLink Center Omaha. The series finale is slated for 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
