BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Junior forward Jeff Jubinville (Edmonton, Alberta) scored twice in the third period of a 2-2 overtime tie between the Bemidji State University men's hockey and University of Alaska Anchorage Friday as the Beavers grabbed a point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings in Bemidji, Minn.
Jubinville’s second goal of the game came with just over eight minutes to play and gave the Beavers (2-5-2; 1-4-2 WCHA) a 2-1 lead, but a tap-in goal by UAA's (2-3-4; 0-2-3 WCHA) Austin Coldwell with 15:29 remaining in regulation knotted the game at 2-2 and that is where it stayed through the end of regulation and overtime.
After a scoreless first period, the Seawolves took the first lead of the contest when Blake Tatchell scored a delayed penalty goal at the 17:25 mark of the second period to give UAA a 1-0 lead heading into the final period of play.
The Beavers opened the third period on a mission.
Jubinville tied the score at 1-1 just 2:14 into the frame with help from David Boehm (Sr., F, Naples, Fla.) and Jordan George (Sr., Madison, Wis.) and gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead at the 11:17 mark on his third tally of the season. George and Sam Rendle (So., D, Grand Rapids, Minn.) were credited with assists on the play.
Alaska Anchorage bounced back with 4:31 left in the game to level the score on a tick-tac-toe play from Matt Bailey to Kory Roy and Austin Coldwell, who buried the eventual game-tying goal in the back of the net.
The Beavers looked to have regained the lead when Jubinville, who was crashing the net, tipped the puck out of the air and past the UAA goaltender Rob Gunderson, but after a review by the referees, the goal was disallowed, sending the Beavers to overtime for the third consecutive game.
The Beavers were out shot 4-1 in the five-minute overtime period. Midway though the extra session, it looked as if the Seawolves would hand the Beavers' their third consecutive overtime loss. Alex Gellert hit the pipe on a virtually empty net, but the Beavers rebounded and BSU goaltender Mathieu Dugas (Sr., L'Assomption, Quebec) stood tall turning aside all four UAA shots to preserve the tie and get the Beavers their first point in WCHA action since a 3-2 victory at University of Nebraska-Omaha Oct. 27.
Special teams play kept Bemidji State in the game tonight. Whistled for six penalties, the BSU penalty-kill unit snuffed out all five of the Seawolves' power-play opportunities. For the first time all season, the Beavers were held without a power-play chance.
In his second start of the season, Dugas finished the game stopping 30 of 32 UA shots. He moves to 0-1-1 on the season.
Bemidji State will attempt to claim its second WCHA series win of 2012-13 tomorrow as it hosts the same Seawolves squad for the second half of the league series. The opening faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center.
Tickets for tomorrow's series finale are just $12. Stop by the Sanford Center Ford Pickup Window for details.
