Harms leads Beavers to 5-1 victory over No. 2 North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Ralph Engelstad Arena) – Brendan Harms (F, So., Steinbach, Manitoba) scored twice and Markus Gerbrandt (F, Jr., Edmonton, Alberta) added a goal and an assist as the Bemidji State University men’s hockey team downed No 2 University of North Dakota, 5-1, for its first victory in Grand Forks since Feb. 7, 1970.

It took the Beavers just 11:26 to find the scoreboard, and the veteran squad showed the nationally-ranked hosts just what they were made of. With Phillip Marinaccio (F, So., Nobleton, Ontario) in the penalty box for Hooking, the BSU penalty-kill unit put the Beavers up 1-0. Harms ripped his first goal of the season in from the right face off dot to give Bemidji State a lead it would never relinquish.

Harms netted his second goal of the night at the 9:09 mark of the second period with help from Gerbrandt. The goal would not only mark the sophomore's second career multi-goal game, it also opened the floodgates.  During the next 10:51, the Beavers got a power-play goal from Gerbrandt and Sam Rendle (D, Sr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Charlie O'Connor (F, So., Elk Grove Village, Ill.) would add even-strength tallies separated by just 15 seconds to end UND goaltender Zane McIntyre's night after 37:35 seconds and take a 5-0 lead into the second intermission.

In his collegiate debut, Michael Bitzer (G, Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) posted 25 saves and kept a potent UND lineup off the scoreboard for 53:08 before Nick Schmaltz found the back of the net on the power play.

The Beavers out shot UND 33-26 and each team was 1-for-4 on the power play.

The victory snapped a six-game winless streak versus North Dakota and stands as just the third win over UND since the series got its start Feb. 6, 1970.  UND continued to hold a 26-3-3 lead in the all-time series.

Bemidji State (1-0-0) returns to Sanford Center to host North Dakota (0-1-0) in the back end of the nonconference, home-and-home series. Opening face off is set for 7:07 p.m.
