(2) North Dakota spoils Bemidji State's home opener, 2-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Newcomer Myles Fitzgerald (F, Port Alberti, British Columbia) scored his first collegiate goal to rally the Bemidji State University men's hockey team in the third period, but the Beavers were unable to dig out of a two-goal deficit and dropped their 2014-15 home opener to University of North Dakota, 2-1, Saturday at Sanford Center.

One night removed from dominating play early en route to a 5-1 victory over UND, the Beavers struggled to find momentum. During the first two periods of play, the teams combined for 12 penalties.

North Dakota struck first, getting an even-strength goal from Colten St. Clair at the 14:17 mark of the first and would take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Despite being whistled for six penalties in the second, UND stretched its lead to 2-0 at 16:19 of the second when Stephane Pattyn netted his first goal of the season.

The Beavers got on the board 4:18 of the third. M. Fitzgerald was on the doorstep to slip a Gerry Fitzgerald rebound past Zane McIntyre, convert the power-play opportunity and finished the night 1-for-7 on the man advantage. Fellow freshman Brett Beauvais (D, Summerside, Prince Edward Island) was also credited with an assist on the scoring play.

Left the Beavers trailing UND by a goal with just over 15 minutes to play, BSU was unable to complete the comeback and dropped the nonconference game, settling for the series split.

BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh (Sr., Dawson Creek, British Columbia) turned aside 30 shots in 58:35 of action, but surrendered both UND goals and was tagged with the loss.  He is 0-1-0 on the season.

The Beavers, now 1-1-0 on in 2014-15, are idle next week before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. to battle top-ranked University of Minnesota at Mariucci Arena, Oct. 24-25.  Both games are set for 7 p.m. opening face offs.
