BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University’s Rachel Craig and Markus Gerbrandt have been selected as Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week, after outstanding athletic performances during the week of Oct. 20-26.
Craig led the BSU volleyball team with 35 kills (3.89 kills/set) last week as the team went 1-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Wadena, Minn. native recorded a career-high 19 kills in the Beavers’ 3-2 win over University of Mary Saturday. In all, she hit .453 on 64 attack attempts, while committing just six errors on the weekend . Craig also contributed defensively posting 16 blocks (1.78 blocks/set) in the two matches.
Gerbrandt led the Bemidji State men’s hockey team with two goals and an assist in the Beavers’ non-conference road weekend at No. 1 Minnesota, Oct. 24-25. The Edmonton, Alberta native posted an assist on the power play late in the Beavers’ 5-2 loss Friday, before posting his first multi-goal game of 2014-15 and the third of his career in BSU’s 5-3 loss Saturday. He added a blocked shot in the series.
Gerbrandt now leads BSU with three goals and five points (3g-2a).
The Bemidji State men’s hockey team, now 1-3-0 on in 2014-15, open Western Collegiate Hockey Association play when they host University of Alaska Fairbanks (5-1-0; 0-0-0 WCHA) Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The teams will get the series underway Friday at 7:37 p.m. and the finale is set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be played at Sanford Center.
The BSU volleyball team, which 5-19 overall and 3-13 in NSIC play, will return home Friday as it takes on Southwest Minnesota State University at 7 p.m. and it closes out the home schedule Saturday at 4 p.m. versus University of Sioux Falls.
