Mavericks use third-period power-play goal to sweep Beavers, 3-2

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Tied 2-2 deep into the third period Minnesota State University's Jon Jutzi ripped a power-play goal past Bemidji State goaltender Michael Bitzer to earn a 3-2 win and complete the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep of the Beavers at Sanford Center.

For the second consecutive night, special teams played a pivotal role for the Beavers. While BUS was 2-for-5 on the man advantage, it also surrendered two power-play goals and spent a total of 10 minutes short-handed.

Gerry Fitzgerald opened the scoring  at the 15:51 mark netting his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a pass from Leo Fitzgerald and Brendan Harms. The goal marked a streak of five straight games with a goal for the sophomore matching a career-long five-game point streak set during his freshman campaign.

At the 16:50 mark the Mavericks came charging back, using a power-play opportunity to generate its first goal of the night. With Cory Ward in the penalty box for tripping, C.J. Franklin funneled a puck through the crease and it bounced off the skate of a Beaver and into the back of the net. Teddy Blueger and Casey Nelson were credited with assists on the play.

Twenty-four seconds later, Zach Stepan stepped in front of a pass between BSU defenders and beat BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer one-on-one to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

For the second time of the series, the Beavers were the beneficiaries of a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Graeme McCormack found the back of the net from the point at the 17:09 mark of the second period to even the score heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

MSU broke the deadlock at the 9:37 mark of the third when Stepan found Juzti with a pass on the right faceoff dot and he found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Bemidji State played short-handed for six minutes of the third period and were unable to make up any ground.

Michael Bitzer took the loss, stopping 18 of 21 shots faced in 58:17 between the pipes. He falls to 1-3-1 on the year.

The Beavers return to action next weekend when they hit the road for a WCHA match up with Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. The series is set to get underway at 6:07 p.m. (CST) Friday from Barry Events Center. The puck will drop for the finale at 6:07 Saturday.
