MARQUETTE, Mich. (Berry Events Center) -- The Bemidji State University men's hockey team recorded a power-play goal early Saturday, but Northern Michigan University scored three unanswered goals to finish the game and the Wildcats defeated the Beavers, 3-1, earning a series victory in Marquette, Mich.
Cory Ward recorded the only goal of the game for the Beavers at the 8:23 mark of the first period. Graeme McCormack and Kyle Bauman logged assists on BSU's first power-play opportunity of the evening. Five minutes later, NMU evened the score and the teams would skate into the first intermission locked in a 1-1 tie.
The Wildcats took the lead at the 13:12 mark of the second period and would add an empty-net goal with four seconds left in the third to solidify the win.
BSU was 1-for-5 on the man advantage and its power-play unit continued to clamp down on its opposition, holding NMU scoreless on all five of its power-play chances.
Michael Bitzer was in net for BSU and made 19 saves in 58:13 of time between the pipes, but allowed two Wildcat goals and was tagged with the loss. He is now 1-4-2 on the season.
The Beavers will not compete next week, but will return to action Nov. 13-14 when they host University of Alaska. The series will get underway at 7:37 p.m. Friday with a 7:07 p.m. opening face off set for Saturday.
