Bemidji State miscues prove costly in 4-3 loss to Alaska

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men's hockey team burst into its series with University of Alaska netting two goals in the first 6:03 of play, but costly miscues provided Brandon Morley and the Nanooks opportunities they would capitalized on to take the 4-3 victory Friday at Sanford Center.

Morley netted two first period goals and added a third at the 16:41 mark of the third to lead all scorers and complete his first collegiate hat trick.

Both Brendan Harms and Gerry Fitzgerald posted multi-point efforts for BSU. Harms a goal to go with two assists, while G. Fitzgerald added two assists.

With the loss Bemidji State drops to 1-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in WCHA play, while Alaska improves to 4-5-0 on the season with a 2-3-0 league record.

Bemidji State exploded out of the faceoff to take a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the game. Cory Ward fed Harms for a tip in the front of the crease. The Alaska goaltender, Jesse Jenks, got a stick on the shot but directed the puck right to Charlie O’Connor, who buried his third goal of the year.

Less than six minutes later (6:03), the Beavers struck again, this time 43 seconds into a 5-on-3 power-play chance. Harms netted his first goal of the season with help form the Beavers’ leading scorer G. Fitzgerald and Markus Gerbrandt.

Down 2-0, the visiting Nanooks came charging back led by Morley. At the 12:39 mark, the forward scored his third goal of the season. At the 19:19 mark, he tied the game, intercepting a pass in front of the BSU goal and sniping a shot from the top of the slot.

Leo Fitzgerald would put the Beavers back in the lead at the 12:35 mark of the second period when brother Gerry found him with a pass in the slot. The sophomore lifted the puck into the top left corner of the net for his first goal of 2015-16. Harms was also credited with and assist after starting the play deep in BSU's defensive end.

BSU's lead lasted only 4:06.

With the Beavers pressing, a blueliner fired a shot from the point; Morley stepped in front, blocked it and went end-to-end to beat Michael Bitzer.

The Nanooks sealed the win with a short-handed goal 3:07 gone in the third.

When Josh Erickson pressured the Beavers’ behind the BSU goal, an errant pass bounced off the end wall to the front of the crease where it deflected off the back of Bitzer's skate for the game-winner.

Bitzer finished the night making saves on 15 of Alaska’s 19 shots on net, while backstopping a BSU penalty-kill unit that was three for-three on the night. He falls to 1-5-2 on the season.

Bemidji State looks to even the series tomorrow when it again hosts Alaska. Opening faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center.
