BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Lake Superior State University scored first and built a 2-0 lead early in the second period Friday. Despite cutting the deficit to a goal on two occasions, Bemidji State University could not recover, dropping the Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest, 3-2, at Sanford Center.
Senior Graeme McCormack led the charge for the Beavers, logging a goal and an assist on a power-play unit that was 2-for-4 on the night. Gerry Fitzgerald accounted for the Beavers' other goal.
Lake Superior State took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on a Gus Correale goal at the 9:57 mark.
The Lakers’ lead would swell to 2-0 at the 4:26 mark of the second period when Mitch Hults beat BSU goaltender Michael Bitzer with help from Bryce Schmitt and Kyle Chapman.
The Beavers, who outshot the Lakers 30-11 during the first two periods, got the breaks they needed late in the second. At the 7:38 mark LSSU’s James Roll was escorted to the box for cross-checking. One minute and 23 seconds later, McCormack and the BSU power-play unit would make the Lakers pay. McCormack netted his fourth goal of the season with help from Markus Gerbrandt and Dillon Eichstadt, cutting the LSSU lead to 2-1.
After Lake Superior State regained its two-goal lead on an Anthony Nellis goal at the 11:42 mark, BSU would come charging back to cut the Lakers’ advantage to one goal heading into the third period. Josh Nenadal earned a five-minute major penalty for contact to the head, setting the Beavers up on their third power play of the evening. Gerry Fitzgerald would net his team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 14:40 mark. Leo Fitzgerald and McCormack were credited with assists on the play. But that was all the offense BSU could muster.
The Beavers managed just one shot on goal during the first 10 minutes of the third period and five in the final 20 minutes total.
BSU Head Coach Tom Serratore pulled his goaltender for the final 1:58 of regulation, but BSU could not find the back of the net.
Bemidji State (2-6-2; 1-5-1 WCHA) and Lake Superior State (3-8-2; 1-2-2 WCHA) will complete the two-game WCHA series tomorrow as the Beavers aim to salvage a series split. The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center.
