Bulldogs bite Beavers in overtime, 3-2

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Ferris State University erased a 2-1 Bemidji State University lead with 25 seconds to go in regulation and stole a victory and two points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings just 47 seconds into the extra frame, 3-2, Friday at Sanford Center.

The Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard. Gerald Mayhew chopped a Brandon Anselmini shot from the point past Michael Bitzer at the 12:26 mark of the first period. Jared Van Wormer was also credited with an assist on the play.

The Beavers bounced back in the second to knot the score at the 15:11 mark of the second period. Dan Billett got the play started when he chipped the puck through the neutral zone to Markus Gerbrandt. The senior alternate captain found John Parker in the slot and Parker beat the FSU goaltender, Darren Smith, shooting the puck in the far side corner for his fifth goal of the season.

BSU took its first lead of the game at the 9:52 mark of the third period on another Parker goal and looked to have the victory sealed. At the 1:11 mark, FSU called a timeout and pulled its goaltender for an extra attacker. Denis Simon scored to push the game to overtime and Mitch Maloney potted the game-winner for the Bulldogs.

The loss marks the Beavers' first since Dec. 12 and snaps a six-game unbeaten streak for BSU.

BSU, now 10-10-4 overall and 7-9-3 in league play, looks to even the series tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. when it hosts Ferris State to wrap up the WCHA series.
