DULUTH, Minn. (AMSOIL Arena) -- Four months after opening the series with a 3-2 victory, Markus Gerbrandt scored his team-leading third game-winning goal of the season to help a short-handed the Bemidji State University men's hockey team complete the nonconference series sweep over the University of Minnesota Duluth with a 2-1 victory at AMSOIL Arena.

The BSU penalty-kill unit got extended time in the game as the Beavers were whistled five times for 21 minutes in penalties and played for nearly 50 minutes without defender Ruslan Pedan, who was tagged for a major penalty and game misconduct during the first period. After allowing its first goal in six games and 20 opponent power-play chances, the unit stood tall late holding the Bulldogs scoreless on their final three opportunities, which included 1:33 of 5-on-3 play late in the first period.

The Beavers and Bulldogs finished the first 20 minutes of play locked in a 1-1 tie. Brett Beauvais opened the scoring for BSU, netting his first goal of the season on a pass from Gerry Fitzgerald just 1:47 into the game. Minnesota Duluth would even the score at the 10:23 mark on a goal form Adam Johnson just 31 seconds into the Bulldogs’ first power-play of the game.

The Beavers used a pair of power-play changes in the second period to start to gain control of momentum. Despite the Bulldogs applying significant pressure in the final moments of the period, the Beavers out shot UMD 12-9 in the period.

BSU and UMD opened the final 20 minutes of play locked in a 1-1 tie. The score remained tied until the 10 minute mark of the frame when Gerbrandt took a pass from Kyle Bauman and gave BSU all the offense it would need potting his sixth goal of the season.

Michael Bitzer stopped 25-of-26 shots in 60 minutes between the pipes to improve to 8-11-4 on the season.

BSU, now 11-11-5 overall, jumps back into WCHA play for the first time since Jan. 22-23 when it travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. for a two-game league series versus Lake Superior State University. The series will get underway at 6:07 p.m. Friday, while Saturday’s series finale is set for a 6:07 p.m. start from Taffy Abel Arena.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
